Martial Arts Weekend Movie Watch: Pirates Take This Round
April 30th, 2012
Martial arts movie buffs have had quite the menu to choose from in these last few weeks, from a new overseas action flick to an intriguing cage-fighting documentary. Sprinkle in some top notch UFC fights and it's probably safe to say there are some happy martial arts fans out there right now. Let's just hope they didn't hear about Safe yet.
As the above trailer shows, Transp- er, Safe is the newest Jason Statham vehicle to feature the usual hard-hitting, gruff-talking, shoot-em-up action one has come to expect from the English action star. Continue reading to learn just how successful the new movie was this opening weekend.
Unfortunately for the team behind Safe, it would seem many of the popcorn-movie action-seekers took a break this weekend from their genre of choice. In its opening weekend Safe opened up in Sixth Place ($7.72M), just barely squeezing above the another weekend opener, The Raven ($7.25M). Both movies were decimated by the claymation feature from left field, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, which took in a respectable $11.4M and Second Place in its debut weekend.
While the 52% critics score that Safe is holding for now may not be enough to sway the most die hard of martial arts fans, others might be better off getting their high-kicking fix with a smaller (albeit better) movie such as The Raid: Redemption.
So how about it? Did anyone out there get a chance to see Safe this weekend or were you waiting for the reviews to come in? Let us know your thoughts on the comments below!
