Robot That Can Climb Stairs, Ninja Robots Not Far Behind?
April 23rd, 2012
So apparently last week DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) released video of a fully robotic platform (read: Creepily humanoid robot monster). What made this robot so interesting? How about that it can traverse stairs, walk on a treadmill, and even do push-ups. It's okay, we'll understand if you've stopped reading to cower under your desk...as if that would stop this nightmare.
The cover story is that a variant of this robot has been created to participate in the DARPA Robotics Challenge, an event that seeks to award 2 million dollars to the robot team that can best maneuver a series of obstacles designed to push the standards of the robotics industry to a whole new level. We're picturing a sort of American Ninja Warrior but with creepy humanoids instead of crazy humans. The events are set to take place this October. The entire press release can be read here.
On a side note, we can't be the only ones thinking this thing bears an uncanny resemblance to a certain Snake-hunting mech of Metal Gear Solid 4 fame...
