KarateMart and Critics Agree: The Avengers Goes Above And Beyond the Hype

The Avengers came smashing into theaters this week with action and adventure that excited fans have been waiting anxiously to feast their eyes and ears on. At the same time, devout Marvel comics fans have been praying that director Joss Whedon did not botch this movie initiative. Well, ladies and gentlemen, let me cut to the chase and echo what reviews on the web are unanimously raving: The Avengers delivers, and packs a punch that a thunder god would approve of.

When God of Mischief Loki threatens the future of the entire planet with an army of aliens and his own mystical powers, Earth turns to the might of the world's greatest heroes: both super-powered and super-skilled. What comprises the remainder of the super-hero epic starts with the assemblage of the Avenger team and, of course, culminates in a fantastic showdown against Loki in which every Avenger skill is tested. On that note, Black Widow's CQC-style combat might be of particular interest to our martial artist readers. Have your martial arts ever taught you how to fight your way out of a room full of people while tied to a chair? Widow's has. Anyways...

The anticipation for this movie may have been great, but the expectations were higher than Stark Tower. Setting out to combine the Iron Man movies, Hulk movies, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger is a tall order. To add on to the pressure, Marvel films don't exactly have the best track record. Let's face it: most of them failed to live up to the hype they created for themselves and left comic fans unsettled. So how did Whedon and the star-studded cast pull off this piece of work?

The Avengers is pretty much enjoyable for any movie-going audience out there. It's filled with enough action and adventure to satisfy without resorting to gore, and it was surprisingly full of good (and clean) humor throughout. From the clever quips you'd expect to hear Tony Stark make to times when the Hulk inappropriately punches his allies across the room, The Avengers keeps you laughing for a lot longer than you'd expect. It showed that the filmmakers put a lot of effort into making sure that iconic heroes like Iron Man and Captain America stayed true to the characters that fans know from the previous movies, while blending them well with each other.

I know what a lot of you are thinking...if I'm a real critic, how come I don't have anything bad to say about The Avengers? The answer to that is...well, I don't know. I mean, I'm sure I could find something wrong with a movie that scored a 93% on RottenTomatoes if I tried. Maybe I just enjoyed the mix of laughter and superhero combat so much that I forgot to look for flaws...

Well, that's my take on the summer's first highly anticipated superhero movie. If you enjoyed it as much as I did, leave a comment and let us know! If you hated it with a furious, Hulk-level rage, let us know as well! We're curious to hear your criticisms, too.
