Long before the katana became the defining symbol of the samurai, another weapon ruled Japan's battlefields. The yumi, a towering asymmetrical longbow, gave skilled archers the ability to strike from incredible distances and shape the outcome of battles long before swords ever crossed. For centuries, mastery of the bow was considered one of the greatest marks of a true warrior, and many of Japan's most legendary samurai earned their reputations with arrows rather than blades.

For centuries, the sword has dominated stories about the samurai, but the weapon that truly changed Japanese warfare was often much simpler. The yari, a straight-bladed spear carried by everyone from humble foot soldiers to legendary generals, gave armies the reach, discipline, and battlefield control needed to defeat even the most skilled swordsmen. It wasn't flashy, and it wasn't romanticized like the katana, yet it became one of the most important military weapons in Japanese history.

The katana has become the symbol of the samurai, but for centuries, another weapon quietly shaped the battlefields of Japan. With its long wooden shaft and gracefully curved blade, the naginata gave its wielder the reach to strike first, the leverage to control space, and the versatility to face enemies on foot or horseback. It wasn't simply another polearm. In the hands of a skilled warrior, it was one of the most effective battlefield weapons ever created.

The samurai carried plenty of famous weapons, but one of the most useful wasn't a sword at all. It was a short metal baton with a single hook near the handle that looked almost too simple to be effective. Known in Japan as the jitte, and commonly spelled jutte by collectors and retailers today, this unusual weapon was designed for control instead of killing. Rather than slicing through an opponent, it could trap a blade, disarm an attacker, and help bring dangerous criminals in alive.

Most people recognize the sai instantly. It's one of the most iconic martial arts weapons ever created, often portrayed in movies, comic books, and video games as the signature weapon of stealthy ninjas or fearless warriors. But almost everything people think they know about the sai is either exaggerated, misunderstood, or completely wrong.
