One side is a rough 600 grit, allowing you to approach the sharpness that you want with little difficulty. The other side is 1000 grit, allowing you to refine your blade to reach that true level of sharpness on your sword, knife, throwing star, or other bladed weapon. When you aren't sharpening anything, you can keep your Japanese style sharpening stone in the handy little box that comes with it.
These sharpening stones are called water stones because water is often used to help the process. But you don't have to use water. The sharpening stone is also great for polishing so that you can restore the shine lost with the ages on that sword used to slay the Dark Lord that was once broken but has now been reforged.
